I'm sure if most mothers knew back then that during the off season, department store Santa could usually be found bumming cigarettes outside the local Woolworth or selling his plasma every week to make ends meet, no child would ever be allowed near his lap. Then again, my point of reference is the grime of upstate NY during it's coal and steel foundry days where Santa smelled of Vermouth and pee.
