Prefaces and liner notes are annoying because we are impatient and want to get to the reason we open a book or an album. Except, in the novel "The Blazing World," Siri Hustvedt tricks us and the preface is actually part of the story. And if you don't read it, well, you're screwed. But then what if a preface/liner note skews my own imagination/interpretation that I might have brought to my experience with the texts/songs. Have I lost out? And then I think, should it be a requirement to watch "Paris is Burning" before watching "Pose" in order to get the background?
